The story is set in the Bakumatsu era, at the end of the shoguns' rule over Japan in the middle of the 19th century. The Tokugawa shogunate uses the brainwashing "Heaven's Songs" by the top idols in Shinsengumi to subjugate the country and its people. In this Japan, writing or singing any songs besides the "Heaven's Songs" is a capital offense. Ryōma Sakamoto and the other rockers rise up and change the world with rock 'n' roll for freedom and justice.

I got bored after watching 5 episodes the story didnt give enough suspence, and not enough comedy. It had very strong points but there was something in this anime that didnt keep me watching it

What I Liked: Otose. Pretty character designs. Interesting premise. What I Didn't: Mostly everything. Typical character designs for the genre. Badly-implemented CG. Poorly integrated anachronisms mess with the (attempted) historical feel of the series. The "beautifying" of famous historical figures beyond recognition makes it so the series never capatalises upon the rich histories behind the character's real-world counterparts (or even the period said characters come from). Commits the Cardinal Sin of Rock Music: Auto-tuning. Each band has only one or two songs, making the musical numbers woefully repetitive. The fact that Otose was just there as a joke character. The ending. Final Verdict: Like a unwanted suitor, Bakumatsu Rock tries awfully hard to impress with its (unfortunately limited and autotuned) rock music, stylish (but woefully imperfect) animation, pretty (but typical for the genre) character designs and wacky (and poorly implemented) anachronisms while trying to maintain its air of nonchalance. It might woo over some but for me it just didn't work.
